Why Should I work with a Registered Dietitian vs. a Nutritionist?

All dietitians are nutritionists, but all nutritionists are not dietitians. Nutritionists are not required to complete the rigorous process necessary to become a dietitian. Dietitians must complete a Master's degree from an accredited dietetics program, complete 1,000 supervised practice, pass the national exam, and complete 75 hours of continuing education credits every 5 years. Registered Dietitian (RD) and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) are protected titles; nutritionist is not. RDs and RDNs are the only board-certified professionals legally permitted to provide medical nutrition therapy, which is the management of health conditions through nutrition.
